Centers for Disease Control and Prevention - Stories of Prevention Research

Two Prevention Research Centers and a Wide Network of Collaborators Search Brazil and Latin America for Solutions. "If a day goes by and I don't come to the 'City Gym,' I think my weight goes up 10 kilos!" says Andreia Lima Da Silva, a condominium caretaker in Recife, Brazil. Ms. Lima overstates her potential 20-pound daily weight gain but not her enthusiasm for free exercise classes led by professional trainers at sites around the city. Evaluation of the program, Academia da Cidade (Portuguese for "City Gym"), is one component of a multinational effort that involves CDC's Prevention Research Centers (PRCs) in reversing the growing trend of physical inactivity among people in the industrialized world. Inactivity puts everyone at risk for diseases like diabetes, heart disease, some types of cancer, and other serious health conditions.

Partnership with Mexico Examines Chronic Disease Prevention

A new groundbreaking multinational research program will focus on identifying methods for preventing the leading causes of death in Hispanic populations. The program will focus its efforts in Mexico — the first time such a collaboration has taken place in the country. Ultimately, results will help address chronic disease in Hispanic communities within the U.S.

The GUIA Project: Assessment of Physical Activity Interventions in Latin America

The Guide to Community Preventive Services

The GUIA project, funded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention/Prevention Research Centers (PRC) Program, was initiated by the Saint Louis University PRC in 2006. The goal of the project is to assess whether the evidence-based recommendations developed by the Task Force on Community Preventive Services in the United States are applicable to Latin American countries.

Release of ACP main results

The Center for Disease Control (CDC - USA), the University of Saint Louis - School of Public Health Prevention Research Center, the UNIFESP (Sao Paulo Federal University, the  Panamerican Health Organization, in a partnership with the Ministry of Health of Brazil, have been developing the GUIA Project - Applying Evidence-Based Physical Activity Recommendations in Brazil – to evaluate successful experiences in the fields of body practices/physical activity since 2006.

The Academia da Cidade Program is considered a model program by CDC

The Academia da Cidade Program (ACP) is an effective strategy to increase population levels of leisure time physical activity, according to a recent paper published in November 2008 (online) by the American Journal of Public Health .The paper report results of the GUIA study sponsored by Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC-USA), a renowned public health agency of the United States government.

Free exercise and nutrition program in Brazil could serve as model in United States 

What if free exercise classes were offered in public spaces such as parks, beaches and recreation centers? When a city government in Brazil tried such a program, it greatly increased physical activity among community members. A group of health researchers who studied the program believes it could also work in U.S. cities with warm climates.
